All Known Strings & their Ranges
Because there are so many different string manufacturers, each with vast ranges of strings, that often come in different tensions … it can be daunting when trying to choose something for the first time or something completely different.
Even though Svencino doesn’t have all of them available NOW, we can source them for you at request.
For now, we have started with the two Brands that we feel offer balance between price, range and quality. By quality we refer to makers’ build durability, sound properties and responsiveness.
Our String Explorer aims to make string testing and sampling possible.
If there is something that you wish us to source for you, please click on the Go To’s for the Brand sites, choose what you want from there and copy-paste the link for your string selection into the request form below.
Let us know what you are looking for in this exploration.
Jargar
Danish hand and made strings since 1956. These strings are known old faithfuls. We have a recent client who decided on the new Superior range for her cello ... after playing on her classic set for NINE years! They work with any instrument giving balance, pleasing tone and crisp response.
Warchal
Svencino has relied on Warchal strings for approximately two decades. They are good value for money offering Great tonal balance, response and long lasting reliability in most of their ranges. Their 'student' strings have everything one could wish for at a great price.
Pirastro
This is one of the oldest string makers, since 1798. They have a large range of strings and rosins. They probably have the greatest range of strings covering everything that you could wish for in Gut, Perlon, Steel with combinations thereof.
Thomastik Infeld
Thomastic Infeld is a Vienna based maker since 1919. Probably known best for their long standing Dominant and Spiracore string ranges. They have a fantastic range of strings for all discerning students and professional string players.
Larsen
Although Larsen strings are a relatively young Danish string maker, they have become well known for making reliably powerful strings that we know for their bold and brilliant sound. In the last few years they have introduced several new ranges that we have been told offer great colour to their tonal attributes.
Corelli Savarez
Savarez, better known as Corelli in South Africa because of their Corelli Alliance strings popularity, are an Italian string maker based in France since 1770! Like the other older string makers they began with Gut strings and added other material builds to their ranges as demand would have it. They offer a vast range of strings for other instruments unlike most makers who generally specialise in the orchestral strings.
Alice
Alice Strings are largely untested at Svencino. We have tried a few different types on student instruments They are a Chinese string maker established in 1999 who also produce strings for a range of other instruments.
Black Diamond
An American string maker that is focused on mostly plucked string instruments. Black Diamond has been making violin and fiddle strings for over a century. It seems that they only have one type of "fiddle" strings available.
D'Addario
D'Addario has a long standing reliability with quality strings. Their ranges are well formulated with something for everyone. They cover electric and orchestral instruments well.
Fiddlerman
We have never seen or tried Fiddlerman Strings at Svencino. However they seem to have a decent writeup on Strings Review. If you have tried them and have something to share about them, Please do.
La Bella
An American string maker. These strings we know nothing about. they are steel strings that are supposed to be affordable. If you know about them, please let us know too.
Lenzner
Lenzner is a string manufacturer that goes back two hundred years in Markneukirchen, Germany. They have an impressive range of strings for both plucked and bowed instruments. Svencino has had the opportunity to work with some of them and have had pleasing sonic results.
Prim
Prim strings are a Swedish string maker who have been around since 1943 (an interesting thing to start manufacturing toward the end of WWII). Svencino has had the opportunity to work with some of their strings and feel they are for instruments that need a considerable lift in sound.
RS Berkeley
These strings are on our radar to find out more about. With a Gold plated E and wound gut on the rest, they would be a direct competitor with Pirastro Oliv and Passione strings. As soon as we have them in stock we will announce opening for testing.
