I am a violin dealer and am the only person in South Africa working in this capacity on a full-time basis, having done so for the past 18 years. Currently, I deal with the most important instruments and bows in this country and am regularly involved in the sale of high-profile and expensive instruments.
In the course of my work, I have had a constant need for the restoring and refurbishing of violins and
bows, including violas and cellos. Since I am not a violin maker, I normally make use of the services of
qualified craftsmen in this sector.
I met Mr Svend Christensen about 15 years ago at a time when he was working to establish himself as
a violin and bow restorer. He did some work for me then and over the years I saw him grow in every
aspect of violin and bow restoration to a point where his work in this respect is as good as one could
expect or hope for. Commensurately I increasingly began using his services for more and more
difficult and complex restorations, always very well executed, to the extent where I now trust him with
most of the important restorations I need for my business.
I find in his workmanship that he is particularly meticulous, performing delicate and critical tasks very
well. As maker he has also known considerable success and I understand that his bows are now
regularly being sold in the USA at good prices.
Mr Christensen has also demonstrated himself as altruist in that he also assists in a skills transfer task
by teaching others the skills required in violin restoration.
Our collaboration has grown over the years from an initial tenuous undertaking to a point where Mr
Svend Christensen now undertakes the major part of my restoration requirements. I hope to continue
seeing him grow and am looking forward to using his services for a long time to come.
